I love the Gazeteer's because they show topography as well as roads, highways, lakes, rivers, etc. Much better than regular road maps.

I use the map for back roads. Works great as a complement to the GPS.

Summary: "Much better than typical state road maps..."
This atlas is about 11" x 15" and shows a lot of good info about the state in the 67 separate maps included. The maps are at a 1:200,000 scale, which gives some good details. Most roads, lakes, and rivers are named, and the maps use shading and elevation lines to show topography. Actual elevations are not shown, except for mountain peaks, which show names and elevations. Many landmarks are shown, as well as campgrounds and sporting locations. For those who want to learn more about a state, these books are well worth the money.

Summary: "Functional, but no better than other maps on the market"
We used this map for the first time last weekend. It was mostly clear and we managed to locate our position in the center of a large town without too much trouble. Overall we were satisfied, but only give 3 stars due to the following problems:
We found the symbols for road numbers confusing - they don't use the standard symbol for interstate - so sometimes we had a list of possible road numbers without knowing which would be used on signposts. Another irritating feature is that the overlap between pages is very small, so that you find yourself flicking back between pages when you are on the edge. Finally, there are no large scale maps of any big cities. As a result we are going to have to buy a separate map of Oklahoma City, which is an additional expense we didn't expect.

Summary: "This is the atlas I recommend for finding back roads and hiking trails. These guides are very detailed because they are written"
This is the atlas I recommend for finding back roads and hiking trails. These guides are very detailed because they are written for each individual state. Hawaii's map pages are 1:84,000 scale and parts of Alaska can have 1:1,1,400,000 scale. Visit http://delorme.com and you can get information on map scales and elevations for the state you're interested in.
I can thank this book for the best 4th of July I ever had. We live in Washington State. Everyone knows that camping is very crowded over the 4th. It was in this book that I found Lost Lake. It's a small lake tucked into the mountains off highway 12 near Mt. Rainier. Lost Lake is off the beaten path and our atlas showed us the way to get there. Not only did we find Lost Lake but we had a waterfront campsite and I caught my limit of rainbow trout. There are many more lakes that we will explore next summer using this atlas. Visit our blog at www.radiodirectoryvagabonds.blogspot.com - and you can see Lost Lake and the beautiful campsite we found. The book is great for armchair journeys, finding boat launches, streams, and public hunting and fishing grounds. This is great for trip planning and treasuring hunting for the perfect campsite!
